Paul R. Berger, M.D. joined SHPS in October 2004 as corporate vice president and chief medical officer. With more than 30 years' experience in the healthcare industry, Dr. Berger plays a vital role in overseeing the company's clinical competencies and enhancing the corporate healthcare strategy.

Dr. Berger previously was principal of the healthcare and group benefits practice and national co-leader of the health and productivity management practice at Mercer Human Resource Consulting, one of the world's leading consulting organizations. In that role, he consulted with managed care programs on behalf of Fortune 50 companies interested in utilization management, case management, and disease management. He has also served as medical director for a national HMO/PPO in Atlanta, where his responsibilities included directing the care management, performance improvement, and provider relations functions.

Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Berger spent nine years in medical practice in Albuquerque, N.M., where he served as chief executive officer of his internal medicine group. He is co-founder of Occupational Health Network, a joint venture between physicians and Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque to provide cost-effective, quality healthcare in the area of workers' compensation.
